New Firewall Procedure & How to Unblock Appropriate Websites

The main purpose of the district firewall is to keep children safe and to not expose them to inappropriate material online. Thus, the Technology Department has put a new firewall procedure in place. Moving forward, all streaming media will require a teacher to authenticate into the Fortigate Firewall. This will prevent students from accessing explicit material and movies from the internet and will help to foster a more productive classroom by having students focus on class rather than a movie or music. Teachers will still be allowed access to streaming media, as videos and music are used as teaching tools.

Technology Department Instructions:
When you come to a website that is being blocked by our filters, you can enter your Active Directory (Printing) username and password. DO NOT SHARE THIS USERNAME & PASSWORD WITH STUDENTS (doing so can cause your account to be suspended, and you will be unable to print or override until it is fixed). This will allow you to show the video or stream the music you want to share with the class. Please note: unblocking a site will unblock it for all students for up to two hours. Directions for this procedure can be found here (Mac / Windows).

We will be logging the websites that get unblocked. If we see a trend of a website being used district-wide, and it is appropriate for school, we will unblock that site, and staff will not need to authenticate it anymore. One example of this is YouTube. Staff can access it without a web filter override because we have Google restrictions in place.

The web filter override is also being implemented for categories of websites that could contain inappropriate material. This new tool will provide the flexibility to override the website, while at the same time keeping them safe from inappropriate material. We trust your judgment as a teacher to know what information is best to share with students. If our logs indicate that a specific staff member is often unblocking websites deemed to be inappropriate, the privilege of using this tool could be revoked. We hope this tool will improve your ability to use the internet to its full potential with your students.

If you need to permanently unblock a website for all students to access, click here to submit a technical support request with problem type “Browser Filtering (CIPA).” Please provide the URL so we can unblock the website and ensure it isn't blocked by filters.

Technology Tip! Setting Gmail as Default

Do you ever click a link to an email address and get frustrated when Outlook or Apple Mail pops up, rather than Gmail? Google Chrome makes it really easy to make your Gmail account the default when clicking linked email addresses.

Built right into the URL bar, adding Gmail as your default mail client is a simple setting that can greatly improve your web browsing experience. You can make the switch in just three clicks! Click here to watch a video on how and set it in your Chrome browser.

REMINDERS:

New Date for Health Benefits Information Meeting

As a reminder, the 2017 health benefits information meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 4-5 p.m. in The Venue at The Englewood Campus (TEC). Our health consultants from Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. will give a brief presentation and answer questions.

Health benefits for 2017 we will have the same plans as in 2016. Englewood Schools has absorbed a 9.71% increase for employee coverage with the Kaiser plans. This increase reflects an additional $180,000 cost to the district. The only change employees will see in the two Kaiser plans will be increases for dependent coverage paid by the employee. Englewood Schools will continue to pay the full premium costs for eligible employees. There are no increases to plan coverage for our dental (Delta) and vision (VSP) plans. A benefits summary detailing all of our plans will be provided at the Nov. 1 meeting and published on the Englewood Schools website thereafter.

Since we do not have any changes with our benefits plans this year, we will not have open enrollment for 2017 benefits similar to years' past. You will not have to complete any paperwork this year UNLESS you are changing plans, waiving coverage (if you are currently enrolled) or adding or removing dependents from your current coverage. If you are not changing coverage for medical, dental and/or vision, your plan will automatically roll over into 2017. If you plan to enroll, discontinue enrollment, or make changes to your plans, you will need to do so during the month of November (no exceptions). All forms will be available on the district website.

If you have questions, please attend the Nov. 1 meeting or email Phil Bedford, Chief HR and Operations Officer.
